Fine Art

Fine art requires exceptional care in transit, on display, and during storage to protect it from damaging temperatures and humidity.

You work to ensure your fine art is accessible for viewing and appreciation by the broadest possible audience, while also preserving it for future generations.

Each work of art is unique and irreplaceable. Often, these works are moved for temporary exhibition at a nearby location or across the world, involving travel for days or months. During transport, works of art need to be protected against potentially damaging variation in temperature and humidity.

  • Are you confident you know the conditions your works of art encounter en route to exhibitions or new locations?
  • Do you know where your shipments are at all times?
  • Would you benefit from a simple solution to monitor individual works of art or collections as they are moved and stored?

The original mission of eProvenance was to assure fine wines reach consumers with perfect provenance by monitoring transport and storage conditions. Our technology is now being used by museums, including the Centre Pompidou and Le Louvre, to protect fine art. Our early-warning system monitors the temperature, humidity and geolocation of fine art, and provides critical information when problems arise and over the long term.

Monitoring with eProvenance provides consistent data to assure artwork has been shipped, displayed and stored under appropriate conditions.

eProvenance has monitored thousands of shipments of prestige goods, collecting millions of temperature data points. As an independent and respected resource, eProvenance can verify conditions of an individual object, several works or a collection during storage and transport. This objective data is also accepted as the basis for insurance claims.

Refine your understanding of what happens to each object loaned out or brought in on loan.

Develop a view of the conditions of all pieces in a given collection, whether on exhibit or in storage.

Develop a view across loaned pieces to track the quality of the environmental conditions encountered over time.

Protecting Fine Art with Top Technology

Audit Service

Assess temperature conditions during transport, display or storage by monitoring a limited number of selected objects, shipments, packaging, containers, destinations, exhibit area or other criteria. Monitoring a statistically valid portion of selected shipments yields audit data that provide indicators of where additional monitoring and changes in shipment practices are needed.

Continuous Monitoring Service

Assure the quality of shipment, display and storage conditions with comprehensive monitoring for traveling exhibitions.

Or, monitor individual works of art with one sensor for up to 15 years to assure long-term assessment of conditions. Readable by a smartphone, the sensor monitors the temperature and humidity, which you can access easily through a secure, online dashboard.

Continuous temperature and humidity monitoring allows you to:

  • Verify effectiveness of protective measures and type of transport (air conditioned, humidified, heated, dry case). Monitor and evaluate the commitment of providers and partners.
  • Verify intermediate storage conditions (warehouse, freight, transport) as well as the exhibition site (temporary or permanent, before or during).

Continuous tracking of geolocation allows you to:

  • Identify date, time and place to pinpoint damage. (Resulting data can be used to establish responsibility and is accepted by insurance providers.)
  • Further enhance security of valuable artwork.

Site Monitoring for Storage or Exhibition Area

eProvenance Temperature and Humidity Monitoring System:

eProvenance monitors artwork “door-to-door,” continuously registering the environmental conditions during all stages of transport and storage.

With eProvenance monitoring solutions, a shipment can be followed via the web on an iPad or smartphone. You’ll know about problems in temperature, humidity or unexpected deviations in the route throughout the duration of transport and exhibition. You can intervene if problems arise and thus prevent damage from occurring.

Monitoring of environmental conditions and location

  • Activation and delivery of sensors to the departure point of the artwork to be monitored “door to door”
  • Access via smartphone, making it possible to get data at any point along the journey of the artwork
  • Access to your data through our secure online database
  • Advice and support for the identification of areas for improvement
